- 1979Founding
The People's National Congress Party is founded by the late Sir Iambakey Okuk, MP for Chimbu Regional, as a movement to give a strong national voice to the Highlands and rural Papua New Guinea.
- 1980sCoalition years
Under Sir Iambakey's leadership, PNC plays a central role in shaping the early coalitions of the Independent State of Papua New Guinea.
- 1986Loss of a founder
Sir Iambakey Okuk passes away. The party transitions into a new generation of leadership while keeping his nationalist vision alive.
- 2002Reorganisation
PNC reorganises under a new National Executive ahead of the 2002 General Election and recommits to grassroots branch building.
- 2007Re-emergence
PNC re-emerges as a major parliamentary force, joining the National Alliance-led government and serving in Cabinet.
- 2011Government
Hon. Peter O'Neill becomes Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea. PNC moves to the centre of the national government, leading reform of the public service, SOEs and education.
- 2012Mandate
PNC wins the largest single-party bloc in the National Parliament, securing a strong mandate to lead a coalition government.
- 2015Tuition Fee Free
The PNC-led government rolls out the landmark Tuition Fee Free education policy, expanding access to school for hundreds of thousands of children.
- 2018APEC
PNG hosts APEC for the first time, putting the country on the global stage under PNC's leadership.
- 2019Transition
Sir Peter O'Neill steps down as Prime Minister. PNC moves into opposition and begins a programme of internal renewal.
- 2022Rebuild
Following the 2022 General Election, PNC consolidates a strong opposition presence and begins refreshing policies and candidates.
- 2024–26National Listening Tour
PNC leaders complete a province-by-province listening tour, the foundation of the 2027 platform.
- 2027Return
PNC contests every open seat across all 22 provinces with a renewed leadership and a costed national plan.
